April Classic: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
By Mark Twain

This month I read/listened to Tom Sawyer. I enjoy listening to audiobooks while doing laundry, dishes, etc.  I was able to go back and forth between my book and the audiobook from the library.

I remember having this read to me as a child in school but after reading it as an adult I am amazed at some aspects of it.  The adventures of Tom and Huck are fun but certain parts I found hard to read. It was published in 1876 and the story was set in the 1840s so it was a very different time.

Tom has a way of getting himself into trouble but he also has a way of getting himself out of trouble. His Aunt Polly has a real soft spot for him even when she tries to be firm.  He falls head over heels for Becky Thatcher and tricks his friends into doing his chores.  Everyone should read Tom Sawyer at least once in their life.

If you are interested in more about Mark Twain there are many things to see in Hannibal, Missouri.  There is a cave to explore, just like the one Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher were lost in.  There are gift shops, museums, and a riverboat cruise.

What am I reading?

Beyond Reach
By Karin Slaughter

This is the 6th and final published book in the Grant County Thriller series. I am about a third of the way into this book and cannot wait to see what happens to Jeffrey, Sara, and Lena.  I am also curious if there will be more books in this series.

April 2019 New Release: The Mother-in-Law

The Mother-in-Law
By Sally Hepworth
Mystery & Thrillers
Women's Fiction
Release Date: April 23, 2019

I really enjoyed this book  It touches on difficult family relationships but this family has more issues than most.

My Netgalley Review:

When Lucy meets Ollie's family she has hopes of a relationship with his mother. Lucy lost her mother at a young age. She wanted to impress Diana and she wanted Diana to like her. The first meeting doesn't go as expected. Lucy feels like Diana doesn't like her. As time goes by there are many conflicts between Lucy and Diana.

The story alternates between Lucy and Diana. It also goes between the present and past.

When Diana is found dead and a suicide note is found in a drawer the family thinks it's a suicide but after the autopsy it looks like someone wanted Diana dead. Of course, everyone knows about the complicated relationship between mother in law and daughter in law. Diana is also very wealthy. Did her daughter in law want her out of the picture? Did someone kill her in order inherit money? Did someone kill her out of anger?

This is my second book by Sally Hepworth. I found it very enjoyable and look forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I received an email today letting me know the audiobook is available on Hoopla. I read the ebook but if you like audiobooks you may want to check out Hoopla

A Gift From My Daughter

My oldest daughter, Bethany, is in her first year teaching 4th grade.  Last week was their Scholastic book fair.  We have talked about The War That Saved My Life a few times and she bought us each a copy.  Due to it's popularity on Booktube and Bookstagram it was already on my book wishlist. I am looking forward to this book and it's sequel. (I have already ordered both of us the sequel from Amazon.)

Saturday Fun....Book Shopping

I enjoyed looking at Barnes & Noble but I didnt buy anything today.

I found too much at Half Price Books.

The beginning of my Everyman's Library Pocket Poets. I bought 3 today...Hardy, Browning, and Poe.

The ones I left behind.

Alice in Wonderland and Little Women are for my book collection. Raggedy Ann and Guess How Much I Love You are being put away for for my kids. I'm building them each a collection for their children.

Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite authors. I have read this one but have never seen the hardback. It is a beautiful story about a father, son, and grandson.  The father develops dementia.  It is a beautiful story.

I'm looking forward to Miss Potter.  The movie was very interesting and opened my eyes to the amazing person Beatrix Potter was during her lifetime.

Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of the authors that I will buy almost every book I find. I grew up watching the Little House on the Prairie series and read the original 8 books last year. Hopefully this will be the year I get to visit Mansfield, Missouri to see her last home.

A gift for my youngest daughter's boyfriend.

What Am I Reading?

Faithless
By Karin Slaughter

I am listening to Faithless with the Libby app through my library. Why am I listening to an audiobook?  The ebook has a 4 week longer wait at the library. This is book 5 of the Grant County Thriller series. I am loving Jeffrey and Sarah's story. Book 6 is on hold and I should have it any day now.

I also have 5 netgally ebooks and 2 ARCs ready to read. Most of these will be May-June 2019 releases.  I have put suspended holds on most of my library holds until I can read some of these.

I love this series!  The Savior is the 17th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward.  I was surprised to get it this morning from the library because it only came out on Tuesday this week. I'm definitely looking forward to reading this weekend!

I'm also still listening to Legendary by Stephanie Garber. I'm hoping to finish it today.
